Michael has authored and edited numerous articles in scholarly journals and popular magazines. He is a former consulting editor for the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, and former contributing editor for New England Ancestors/American Ancestors. Starting with the December 2020 issue, he is the managing editor of the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly.
